NCSB Credential Portfolio
The National Council of Safety Boards offers six rigorous credentials spanning the full spectrum of the safety profession. Each credential is built on a validated Body of Knowledge and requires demonstrated competency through examination.
For experienced safety leaders overseeing enterprise-wide programs, culture transformation, and cross-functional risk strategy at the organizational level.
Validates mastery of safety program management, regulatory compliance frameworks, and organizational risk management systems.
Covers the full breadth of workplace safety — hazard identification, OSHA compliance, incident investigation, and safety training delivery.
Specialized credential for professionals focused on workplace risk assessment, quantification, and mitigation strategy development.
Focuses on occupational health and safety principles, industrial hygiene fundamentals, and workforce protection program design.
Technical credential for safety engineers and systems professionals working with process safety, reliability engineering, and safety-critical systems.
Eligibility Requirements
All NCSB credentials require candidates to meet education, experience, and professional standing requirements prior to sitting for examination. Requirements vary by credential level.
Flagship Credential Requirements (CSLP / CSMP / CWSP)
Education
Bachelor's degree or higher in safety, occupational health, engineering, or a related discipline; OR an Associate's degree with additional years of qualifying experience.
Professional Experience
Minimum 3–5 years of documented, professional-level safety experience aligned to the NCSB Body of Knowledge competency areas for the selected credential.
Professional References
Two professional references from supervisors, managers, or senior safety professionals who can attest to your qualifications and relevant experience.
Ethics Agreement
Agreement to uphold the NCSB Code of Professional Ethics and submit to NCSB's peer disciplinary process if violations are alleged.
Application Process
NCSB operates a rolling application review cycle. Most applications are reviewed within 15 business days of complete submission.

Register at ncsafetypro.com and complete your candidate profile, including education history, employment records, and professional references.
Submit Your Application
Select your target credential and submit your application with all supporting documentation. Application fees are non-refundable once submitted.
Eligibility Review
NCSB staff reviews your application against eligibility requirements. You will be notified of approval, denial, or requests for additional documentation.
Schedule & Sit for the Exam
Once approved, you have 12 months to schedule and complete your examination at an authorized testing center or through remote proctoring.
Receive Your Credential
Passing candidates receive digital and physical certificates. Your credential appears in the NCSB Credential Holder Directory immediately upon issuance.

Maintaining Your Credential
All NCSB credentials require recertification every three years. Credential holders must accumulate continuing education (CE) points and reaffirm their commitment to the Code of Ethics.
- 60 CE points required per three-year cycle for flagship credentials (CSLP, CSMP, CWSP)
- 45 CE points required per cycle for CWRP, COSP, and CSSP
- Qualifying CE activities include training, conferences, presentations, committee service, and published work
- Late recertification incurs a reinstatement fee; credentials lapsed more than 12 months require re-examination
